THE CHILDREN

Our school is helping a wide range of children achieve an education that they would not have otherwise. Meet six of them here:

Deborah Nakiggwe, age 15

Deborah’s father is unemployed and struggles to look after his family. She loves films and sneaks behind the village “cinemas” (shacks with a small television) to watch them. Deborah’s biggest wish in life at the moment is to own a bicycle one day which will give her a sense of freedom.

Flavia Nasolo, age 15

Flavia’s father is dead and her mother has full-blown AIDS. There is no spare money in her family for her school fees. When Flavia is not caring for her mother or her siblings, she can be found singing and dancing which are her favourite things to do.

Justine Nankya, age 16

Justine’s father has also died of AIDS and her mother is infected as well. Justine has spent time working near the golf course in Kampala and has grown to love the game. She has used some clubs occasionally and thinks it is the best game on earth!

Rebecca Nalumansi, age 16

Both Rebecca’s parents have died and she is an orphan. She lives with her grandmother, but she is very ill and needs a lot of care. Rebecca can’t wait to be with other teenagers at school and dreams of running her own hair dressing salon when she grows up which plays great music.

Robert Barugahare, age 15

After Robert’s father died and his mother was diagnosed with AIDS, life became a struggle. Robert’s mother was too ill to continue working and getting food every day was difficult. Robert finished top of his class at primary school and was desperately keen to continue his education. There was, however, no money. Robert left school and started to work as a porter on different building sites. He didn’t earn a wage but got a single meal a day from his employer which was the only meal he ate. He adores football and hopes that the school team will be as good as Manchester United, his beloved football team. Robert also wants to join the local Boy Scouts group because he loves being outdoors.

Susan Ninsiima, age 17

Susan’s father was in the army but when many units were disbanded he lost his job. He is now unemployed and tries to provide for his family by growing a few vegetables in the dirt outside their single room house. Susan loves reading books and can’t wait to start on any books we are able to get to start the school’s library.
